MUMBAI (AGRI WORLD) – After disposing of all old buffer stocks of pulses, the government plans to rebuild these with pulses procured at the minimum support price in 2018-19 (Jul-Jun), due to estimates of a smaller crop this year, a senior government official said today.

"The government has asked the central nodal agency NAFED (The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India) to transfer around 14 lakh (1.4 mln) tn of pulses procured this kharif and rabi seasons to buffer stock," the official said.

The buffer, with a limit of 2 mln tn, was created two years ago to safeguard consumers from the brunt of a sharp hike in prices due to shortage in markets. However, prices of pulses fell soon after the creation of the buffer, and the government has been offloading the stock through welfare schemes.

Earlier, the government had no plans to rebuild the buffer as markets were well supplied due to record production in the last couple of years, as well as due to hopes of bumper output this year, the official said.
